Hawa Hunt in custody after she was arrested live on air in Freetown, Sierra Leone
In 2023, Hawa Hunt, a popular musician and social commentator, made a striking statement on camera about Maada Bio, Sierra Leone's controversial president.
In the nearly five-minute video, which went viral on social media, Hawa Hunt spoke in Krio, and we've translated key excerpts of her comments into English:
"The man has big guts! He stood up a week ago when Zainab Sherriff accused him of being a killer. They took her away and locked her up. He’s not my president. I’ve told you that Sierra Leone doesn’t have a president. For the past five years, Sierra Leone hasn’t had a president. I see a small child in a bug's skirt jumping around."
In retaliation, Maada Bio ordered Hawa Hunt's arrest while she was participating as a contestant in a reality television show, which was broadcast live.
This act drew swift condemnation from many.
Human rights lawyer Ady Macauley stated, "Arresting someone on live television is a new low, but it's not surprising. The State has shown that it can stop at nothing to intimidate and oppress. Even the slightest provocation from ordinary citizens leads to substantial and disproportionate responses from the police. Hawa Hunt's arrest is petty, sad, and a clear act of vindictiveness. Free Hawa."
Hawa Hunt was born in Makeni, Sierra Leone. She grew up during the civil war, moving between the capital, Freetown, and the countryside.
Although living in Sierra Leone during those years was challenging, it instilled in her an appreciation for life, beauty, and perseverance. Her past and her passion for her country’s progress inspire her music.
She has lived in Santiago, Chile, while her family lives in Canada and the Emirates.
Hawa is a multifaceted artist: a singer, songwriter, dancer, model, and fitness trainer. She takes pride in her music and dance, which blend contemporary and traditional styles.
Hawa aims to serve as a role model for the youth of Sierra Leone, particularly for vulnerable women and young people.
To give back to her roots, she founded the Hawa Hunt Caring and Sharing Event, held every six months in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
This initiative allows her to contribute to her country of origin.
Additionally, she is a proud mother of three lovely children.
Hawa believes that music has the power to bring people together, and it fills the void with hope when adversity leaves us silent.
